Advancing the Philippine's sustainable sewage infrastructure with wastewater treatment systems
Minutes signing ceremony held for the launch of the verification project by JICA, Baguio City, and FujiClean

FujiClean (Head Office: Chikusa-ku, Nagoya, Japan; President: Masashi Goto) has reached an agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Baguio City, Philippines to launch a study on the "Dissemination, verification, and commercialization related to the effective and sustainable development of sewer infrastructure by using decentralized wastewater treatment technology in the Philippines." This study was selected by JICA under its "SDGs Business Supporting Survey for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises." A signing ceremony for the Minutes of Meeting (M/M) was held on August 27, 2024, in Baguio City.

This project aims to verify wastewater treatment system technology suitable for the new effluent standards implemented in the Philippines, and create an effective and sustainable sewage infrastructure. Specifically, we will check the operational status of the FujiClean decentralized wastewater treatment systems we installed in Baguio City, analyze water quality, and provide maintenance and management instructions for the local community. Through this, we will verify the performance of our systems in compliance with the new effluent standard throughout the Philippines. Additionally, we aim to increase the sales channels for our wastewater treatment systems by enhancing the reliability of our products and technologies, and by raising awareness of the benefits of wastewater treatment systems. Furthermore, in areas where sewerage improvement is planned, combining sewerage and wastewater treatment systems will make it possible to improve the infrastructure earlier and more efficiently.

Background and purpose of project

In the Philippines, the deterioration of water quality in public water bodies is increasingly becoming a serious issue due to increased population and urbanization. The widespread use of septic tanks has led to serious problems of organic pollution and ammonia nitrogen pollution caused by human wastewater. Through this project, we aim to expand the use of wastewater treatment systems and contribute to resolving these problems.

Expectations for wastewater treatment system

Our wastewater treatment systems are capable of decentralized wastewater treatment regardless of the topographical conditions. As a result, they can be implemented in mountainous areas like Baguio City and in regions where building sewerage culverts is challenging due to a lack of available land for constructing wastewater treatment facilities. With this project, FujiClean aims to improve the reliability and awareness of wastewater treatment systems and hopes to expand the use of these systems throughout Southeast Asia.

This initiative is expected to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including "Good Health and Well-being," "Clean Water and Sanitation," and "Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure." FujiClean is actively contributing to the sustainable development of communities by establishing new business models.
